Which Sling Fits Your Lift?

Step 1 - Material
General-duty lifting between −40 °C and +100 °C - factory, warehouse, precast yard	Polyester sling	Will not rust, and protects finished surfaces. The default choice for most industrial lifts.
Sustained heat above +100 °C, or sharp edges that cannot be padded	Steel wire rope sling	Polyester is rated −40 °C to +100 °C and cuts far more easily than steel. Above that range, or where edges stay sharp, specify wire rope.
Weight-critical or offshore lifts where rigger handling dominates	HMPE sling	About 1/8 the weight of a steel wire rope sling at equal breaking strength - see our HMPE slings for offshore and wind work.
Step 2 - Sling Type
Delicate, polished or irregular loads - castings, mouldings, finished assemblies	Round sling	The round body spreads contact pressure and conforms to shape, with no stitch-line pressure points to mark the load.
Flat, angular or uniform loads - steel plate, pipe bundles, precast units	Webbing sling	The flat face seats squarely and resists rolling, and damage is visible on both faces at inspection.

1. Single-ply: 7.5 mm polyester webbing. Double-ply: two 7.5 mm plies sewn to a 15 mm composite. Final WLL is established for the complete sling construction, stitching and rated configuration — see the Double Ply tab.
2. Dimensions refer to the standard sling body; the optional additional protective sleeve increases outer dimensions slightly. Eye length is measured with the eye pulled flat (taut).
3. Longer lengths and higher capacities are engineered to order.

They are ideal for general lifting, steel pipes, machinery, and concrete products where a flat, soft surface protects the load. The reinforced eyes fit hooks and shackles securely. The eye-and-eye form enables direct connection to shackles, hooks and other lifting hardware sized to the eye.

Eye-and-eye slings connect directly to hardware through their reinforced eyes; endless slings wrap the load and rotate wear around the loop. Choose eye-and-eye for planned lifts with hardware, endless for repetitive basket or choker work.

Double-ply slings use two layers of webbing for higher capacity and better resistance to cutting and abrasion in demanding applications. Single-ply is lighter and more flexible for general use.

EN 1492-1 limits the effective working length (EWL) to a deviation of no more than ±3 % of the nominal length. It is measured with the sling laid flat, using a steel tape or rule graduated in 1 mm increments. Reinforced eyes distribute stress at the hook contact point and use wear-resistant stitching to prevent fraying, extending sling life in repeated lifting cycles.

EN 1492-1 covers flat webbing slings — slings made from one or more layers of woven polyester webbing in a flat band. EN 1492-2 covers round slings — a continuous load-bearing core of parallel yarn enclosed in a seamless tubular sleeve. Both are synthetic slings, but round slings have a softer, more flexible body that conforms to irregular or delicate loads and protects finished surfaces, while flat webbing slings provide a stable, wide bearing surface ideal for balanced basket or choker hitches. Pick round slings for delicate or oddly shaped loads and flat webbing slings when you want a flat, wide contact area. Custom or project-engineered configurations are subject to separate technical review.

Add a protective sleeve when lifting loads with sharp edges, rough surfaces, or abrasive corners. The sleeve absorbs wear and protects the load-bearing webbing underneath.

Check both eyes for cuts, broken stitches, abrasion, or chemical damage. Verify the WLL label is legible and matches the lift plan. Withdraw immediately if you see cuts, abrasion, chemical damage, heat marks, missing labels, or any structural deformation.

Inspect Eyes & Stitching

Inspect the webbing body, reinforced eyes, and stitching before every lift for cuts, abrasion, broken yarns, or missing labels.

Check Eye Stitching

Check the eye reinforcement stitching — the eye-to-body junction is the highest-stress area; reject the sling if you see stitch separation or elongation.

Never Exceed WLL

Never exceed the WLL on the identification tag. Webbing slings are color-coded by WLL per EN 1492-1 for quick, paper-free pre-lift verification.

Apply Hitch Factors

Apply the mode factor for the hitch used: vertical (straight pull) 1.0 × WLL; choker 0.8 × WLL; basket 2.0 × WLL with both legs parallel, or 2.0 × WLL × cos θ as the legs open — 1.4 × WLL at 45° and 1.0 × WLL at 60°. Recalculate the effective WLL for the hitch and angle actually used.

Use the Wide Face

Lay the flat webbing against the load to use its wide bearing face; never bunch or twist it into a narrow, rope-like contact that concentrates stress.

Pad Sharp Edges

Fit protective sleeves or corner pads on sharp edges — flat webbing cuts far more easily than round slings when dragged across an edge.

Never Tie Knots

Never tie knots or join two slings by threading eyes together; connect through the eye with shackles or hardware sized to the eye.

Respect Temperature Range

Keep within −40 °C to +100 °C for polyester, and away from welding arcs, molten splatter, and chemical contact (acids, alkalis).

Retire on Damage

Retire immediately on any cut in the webbing or stitching, or on any chemical attack, heat marks, missing tags, or structural deformation.
