FAQ

Ratchet Straps FAQs

A ratchet strap uses a mechanical ratchet buckle to tension and lock the webbing, making it ideal for heavy or high-vibration cargo securing. A vehicle recovery strap is designed for towing and roadside recovery, with reinforced eyes and materials chosen for dynamic shock loading.

No. Ratchet straps are designed for cargo securing only. They must never be used for lifting, hoisting, or personnel support. For lifting operations, use certified lifting slings with the correct safety factor and markings.

We supply 1", 2", 3", and 4" widths as standard, with custom widths available for specialized applications. Options include S-hooks, J-hooks, flat hooks, E-track fittings, and double-J hooks. Custom lengths, colors, and branded labels are available on request.

Match the strap’s LC (lashing capacity) to the weight and dynamics of your cargo. For road transport, total lashing capacity should generally equal or exceed the cargo weight in the direction of restraint. Contact us for a calculation based on your application.

Ratchet straps are manufactured to EN 12195-2 and AS/NZS 4380 CE certified. We conduct webbing tensile tests, buckle load tests, and pre-shipment inspections on every batch.

Inspect the webbing for cuts, fraying, UV damage, or chemical contamination. Check that the ratchet mechanism locks and releases correctly and that hooks are not bent or cracked. Remove damaged straps from service.

Our standard polyester ratchet straps perform from -40°C to 100°C. For extreme cold or heat, we can recommend webbing and buckle materials suited to your operating environment.

Safety

Ratchet Strap Safety & Usage Guidelines

1
CRITICAL: Ratchet straps are for cargo securing ONLY — never use for lifting, hoisting, or personnel support
2
Check the lashing capacity (LC) label before each use; never exceed the rated LC, and apply derating for any non-straight pull
3
Inspect webbing for cuts, abrasion, UV degradation, or chemical damage; reject if cuts cross more than 10% of webbing width or if the webbing is frayed
4
Operate the ratchet mechanism correctly: open the handle fully, thread the webbing through the mandrel without twisting, and tension with 2–3 full handle strokes — overtensioning damages webbing and shifts the load
5
Verify the ratchet is fully closed and locked during transport — a partially closed ratchet can release under vibration; check tension at regular intervals on long trips
6
Engage hooks fully on approved anchor points (track fitting, lashing ring, welded D-ring) — never hook onto unprotected edges, suspension, brake, or fuel system components
7
Use edge protectors on sharp cargo corners — they extend webbing life and prevent sudden cut failures under transport shock loading
8
Comply with local transport regulations: EN 12195-2 for Europe, AS/NZS 4380 for Australia/New Zealand, and DOT/WSTDA for North America
9
Replace immediately if webbing is frayed, hooks are bent or corroded, or the ratchet mechanism slips, jams, or fails to lock
10
Store clean, dry, and away from direct sunlight, chemicals, and heat sources; UV exposure during storage degrades webbing strength
